Seminar - Climate Change, Energy and Development: The case of biofuels and bioenergy for meeting growing energy needs and development goals.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the International Institute for Sustainable Development has the pleasure of inviting you to a seminar on this topic, on:
7 March 2008
10:00-13:00
Eigtveds Pakhus
Asiatisk Plads 2 G
1448 Copenhagen
The aim of this seminar will be to explore global climate change and energy issues through the lens of recent experiences related to biofuels, with a view to understanding the effects of current biofuel policies, including subsidies and tariffs, on food production and supply, poverty alleviation and sustainable development.
Energy is key to development, poverty alleviation and achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. Energy supply also, however, accounts for one-quarter of current global human-induced greenhouse gas emissions, making it a fundamental contributor to climate change. By 2030, the world's energy needs are expected to be 55 percent greater than today. With world energy demand growing, particularly in developing countries, global energy-related greenhouse gas emissions are projected to rise significantly. At the same time, scientists are calling for a 25 to 40 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by mid-century to avoid serious changes in the Earth's climate system. Reconciling these demands and addressing the linkages between emissions, energy production and sustainable development is one of the fundamental challenges of the 21st century.
