Seminar 15. April: Climate Change and Forests

COP 15 Copenhagen 2009 - UNFCCC Denmark's Host Country Website, January 2, 2009

Climate Change and Forests - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and The World Conservation Union (IUCN) has the pleasure of inviting you to a seminar on this topic on Tuesday 15 April 2008 9:30- 12:00, Eigtveds Pakhus, Asiatisk Plads 2 G, 1448 Copenhagen.

What is the role of forests in mitigating and adapting to climate change? Forests play an important role in climate mitigation by storing carbon, while deforestation and land degradation contribute approx 20% of current green house gas emissions.

Forests also provide a wide range of goods and services such as water, timber, fuel and food for developing countries and are also important for industrialized economies. Climate change is the single largest threat to human wellbeing. Many of the impacts of climate change will be felt through changes in the goods and services that natural ecosystems, including forests, provide to human society. How can we ensure that the lessons learned over the past 25 years in development and conservation on the importance of forests to rural communities and biodiversity become part of the solutions to the climate change problem?

IUCN will use the issues of climate change and forest landscapes to highlight some key elements of their programme of work.

This interactive session will begin with a brief presentation by IUCN’s Director General, Julia Marton-Lefèvre, on IUCN and its long term vision and direction. The Deputy Director General, William J Jackson will present IUCN’s Programme for 2009-2012 with an emphasis on how it is addressing climate change. Stewart Maginnis, Head of IUCN’s Forest Conservation Programme and Wale Adeleke, West Africa Coordinator for IUCN’s Livelihoods and Landscapes Initiative will provide some case studies examples.

This will be followed by a Question and Answer session.

Kindly register your attendance at: MIL@um.dk by 11 April 2008.
