Nepal will import power from India

United Press International, Jan. 5, 2009

KATHMANDU, Nepal, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Nepal announced it plans to import power from India to offset an energy crisis and avert a blackout.

Nepal is expected to experience a power crisis over the next month, and the country will import power from India, said Shanker Koirala, secretary at the Ministry of Water Resources. The government will import 20 megawatts of power from Tanakpur in India, the Press Trust of India reported.

Nepal currently is generating 240 megawatts of power, 60 percent less than its current demand of 700 megawatts.

Once the recently completed 70-megawatt hydropower project comes online in about two weeks, additional power also will be provided, the Nepal Electricity Authority said.
