Some 70 hot spots detected in West Sumatra

ANTARA News, 05/26/09 19:11

Padang, West Sumatra (ANTARA News) - The Tabing Padang meteorological, climatology, and geophysics office (BMKG) has recorded a total of 70 hot spots in West Sumatra.

"The monitoring of BMKG on Tuesday morning indicates that there is an increase in the number of hot spots in West Sumatra region, due to the dry air humidity," Amarizal, head of the Tebing Padang BMKG`s observation and information section, said here on Tuesday.

He explained the hot spots were triggered by dry air which has occurred over the past two weeks. At least 350 hot spots were detected on Sumatra Island, including in West Sumatra, he said.

In West Sumatra, the hot spots were detected in Dharmasraya District, South Solok District, Pasaman District, South Pesisir District, Agam District and Limapuluh Kota District, he said.

Have has covered a number of the province`s districts, although it has not disturbed the visibility.

Forest and plantations fires had in the past induced hot spots on the island of Sumatra.

"We don`t know exactly whether the tens of hot spots are spreading in forest and plantations areas. Mostly likely there are in both areas," he said.

Amarizal predicted that the air humidity would occur until the next three months, and the number of hot spots were expected to increase.

Beginning the end of May, the rain fall in West Sumatra would decrease and it might cause the air to be drier, he said.

Meanwhile, in Riau Province, some 159 hot spots of forest and plantation fires were detected.

Based on the latest monitoring of NOAA 18 Satellite, the hot spots were detected in 11 out of the existing 12 districts in the province.

The hot spots spread in Rokan Hilir district (55 hot spots), Pelelawan district (24), Rokan Hulu (17), Kuantan Singingi and Indragiri Hulu districts (respectively 13), Bengkalis district (11), Kampar (10), Siak (seven), Indragiri Hilir district (six), Pekanbaru (one), and Dumai City (two). (*)
