Sidoarjo mud disaster difficult to stop

ANTARA News, 05/19/09 08:08

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Sidoarjo mud handling board disclosed that the mud outpours in Sidoarjo, East Java, which had been active for 3 years now, is difficult to stop.

The board`s deputy chief Hardy Prasetyo said in Jakarta Monday his side is now focusing on overcoming mud spill on the surface, rather than trying to stop the ourpouring.

"For the last three years, the mud outpouring still reached 90,000 m3 with a temperature of 80-90 degrees Celcius. So, right now there is no effective way of stopping the mud outpours," he said.

He said the mud outpouring had reached the stage of cauldron with a rapid process of deformation reaching four meters a day.

Some efforts to stop the outpouring that had been done included building a relief well and planting concrete balls. But everything is of no avail, although trillions of rupiah had been spent.

Agus even said that such outpouring is like hot magma, which may last tens and even hundreds of years.

The mud in Sidoarjo for the first time burst in Siring village, Porong, Sidoarjo, East Java on May 26m 2006, 200 meters from the well drilling of Lapindo Brantas Inc in Renokenongo village.

Nine experts maintained that the disaster has nothing to do with drilling, but is a natural phenomenon, for the reason that the center of the outpours lies 200 meters from the drilling site, and therefore suspected of being triggered by a tectonic quake in Yogyakarta on May 27, 2006.

Meanwhile three other experts insisted that the cause of the disaster was drilling. (*)
