Philippines may reactivate Bataan

MANILA, Philippines, Dec. 24 (UPI) -- The Bataan nuclear plant in Morong, Philippines, may be reactivated, according to a recent memorandum.

The Philippines national power company Napocor signed a three-year memorandum of understanding with Kepco, a South Korean electric generation company, to study the possibility of reactivation, The Manila Times reported.

According to Napocor, the memorandum does not give Kepco any preferential rights to future projects.

"It is clearly understood between Napocor and Kepco that nothing in the MOU shall be construed as a commitment by Napocor to Kepco to rehabilitate the BNPP, and that the MOU is non-exclusive," Napocor said.

The Bataan plant was a 630-megawatt plant that was supposed to become commercially operable in the 1980s but was halted by protesters and has been idle since.

The government has expressed interest in reactivating the Bataan nuclear plant and building new plants as well.
