UPI, Dec. 29, 2008

SHANGHAI, Dec. 29 (UPI) -- Work began near Shanghai on one of two new nuclear generating units.

The two units are planned as an addition to the first phase of the Qinshan nuclear power plant in Fangjiashan, Haiyan, on the northern coast of Hangzhou Bay, Zhejiang province, near Shanghai.

According to Xinhua news agency, the plant is the first of its kind to be built in China. Each of the two pressurized reactors will have an installed capacity of 1 million kilowatts, and they are expected to be operational by 2013 and 2014.

Construction of the main Qinshan plant started in 1985, and it has a 300,000 kilowatt capacity and a 30-year lifespan. It started generating power in 1991.

The second phase is now under way, and the third phase will incorporate two Canadian CANDU heavy-water reactors.
