The European Commission will launch a public debate on forest policy, Environment Commissioner Janez Potocnic told the meeting in La Granja de San Ildefonso in a video message.

The biggest threats to forests included wildfires and depopulation, Espinosa said, stressing the need for Europe-wide policies.

The meeting was due to approve a declaration which will be submitted to the European Council in June.

About 40 per cent of EU territory is covered by forested areas, according to a Green Book on forest protection presented at the meeting.

Forest-related activities employ more than two million people in the 27-nation bloc.
