"A nuclear power plant could not be built in the regions before feasibility studies have been conducted on its construction site," Head of the National Atomic Energy Agency (BATAN) Hudi Hastowo said here on Monday.
Speaking at a workshop on regional innovation and management, he pointed out the need for feasibility studies in response to the many requests made by regional governments for the construction of nuclear power plants in their respective regions.
The requests for the construction of nuclear power plants among others came from the provinces of Bangka-Belitung, South Kalimantan, East Kalimantan and West Kalimantan.
He said that studies that were also needed included vulcanologic and seismic studies where the site of a nuclear power plant must be located far from earthquake epicenters or faults. Besides, studies on the strength of a nuclear power plant, are also needed.
After studies on the site and strength of nuclear plants, the other things that needed to be studied included their power networks, investment, local people`s acceptance and others, he said.
He added that the site of a nuclear power plant should consist of five reactors each of which of a capacity of 1,000 to 1,600 Megawatts. (*)
