Filipinos urged to conserve water amid dry spell
The Philippine government Friday urged Filipinos to conserve water amid fears of a long dry spell that has already caused crop damage of almost 3 billion pesos (65 million dollars). Authorities warned that water at Angat Dam in Bulacan province just outside Manila, one of the country's main dams servicing the capital and nearby province, has sunk to alarming levels

"We need to conserve water otherwise we will all suffer," presidential spokeswoman Charito Planas said.
Planas urged Filipinos to use buckets and basins to save on the amount of water they use in taking baths, washing clothes and flushing toilets.
"Let's recycle water that we use in taking baths to flush our toilets," she added.
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo earlier ordered the country's water resources board to reduce immediately the quantity of water released for irrigation and household use from the Angat Dam.
The agriculture department said the drought, which could last until July, has damaged more than 200,000 metric tons of rice, corn and other crops worth 2.84 billion pesos since last December.
