Rio de Janeiro - At least 45 people have died in a series of mudslides in Brazil over the past three days, broadcaster CNN reported Saturday. The deaths occurred in Rio de Janeiro and in the outlying areas amid constant heavy rain that has caused hundreds of houses in poverty-stricken Favelas to collapse. Many of the neighbourhoods are built precariously on cliffs and hills.

On Friday, a mudslide at the Sankay Inn resort in Angra dos Reis, west of Rio, killed 22 people and injured dozens, the broadcaster said, citing state officials. Rescuers found another 15 bodies floating on the nearby island of Ilha Grande, according to CNN.

Some victims were rescued from under the mud and rubble while more bodies are believed to be trapped in remote areas. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Salvia said he would send marine and naval forces to assist in rescue operations in these areas.
