IPCC chairman warns the US

President Barack Obama should not arrive at the UN Climate Conference in Copenhagen (COP15) without a meaningful commitment to confront climate change, says Rajendra Pachauri, Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Nobel Laureate.

”He should come there, provided the US is willing to commit and follow through with something really strong,” Pachauri said in an interview with Grist Magazine.

”Because if it’s going to be much lower than what the Europeans have committed to, I’m not too sure it will be seen as a plus,” he added.

Having said that, Rajendra Pachauri is optimistic about the prospects for climate action in the United States and in Copenhagen, calling the American approach to climate change under Barack Obama ”quite remarkable”.

”I personally think you will see negotiations sort of snowballing. Things may seem rather static at this point in time, but as we get closer to Copenhagen, you’ll find people realizing that time is short and we’ve got to get moving. In the end, my expectation is that Copenhagen will give us a good agreement,” he told Grist.
