EU, China to sign several deals in Prague

Prague Daily Monitor, 20 MAY 2009

Prague, May 19 (CTK) - The European Union and China will sign several deals, including a science and technology partnership (CESTY), a joint statement on a clean energy centre (EC2) and an agreement on cooperation between small and medium-sized enterprises, at a summit in Prague on Wednesday.

China and the EU are to sign also a memorandum of understanding on a joint working group on high-tech trade. They also want to declare their effort to demonstrate Near Zero Emissions Coal (NZEC) technology using carbon capture and geological storage.

The EU and China believe that NZEC can be a possible model for technology cooperation projects in connection with the preparation on the Copenhagen agreement concerning climate change.

The global economic crisis, and economic relations and the environment will be among the main topics of the summit that will be led by Czech President Vaclav Klaus.

Human rights activists plan to organise calm protest events during the summit to point to the violation of human rights in China.

Falun Gong members are to meet outside the Chinese Embassy in Prague. The Amnesty International (AI) organisation will hold a "parallel summit" of NGOs critical of China near Prague Castle where the summit will take place.

AI and a group of Czech MPs supporting Tibet called on Czech Prime Minister Jan Fischer to mention human rights issues in his bilateral meeting with Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao.

The People in Need organisation and other NGOs Tuesday called on Klaus to include human rights issues in the agenda of the talks with China.

The European Commission recalls that the EU is the second largest trade partner and China is the largest trade partner of the EU.
