Palembang told to stop swamp conversion

The Palembang branch of the Indonesian Environmental Forum (Walhi) called on the local government Monday to stop swamp conversion to reduce flooding in the city

Walhi reported that swamp areas in Palembang had shrunk from 22,000 hectares to 7,300 hectares due to conversion into housing complexes, offices and warehouses.

It said the conversion took place because the local government legalized it in the 2008 city regulation on the management and retribution of swamp areas.

The regulation stated that 2,106.13 hectares of swamp areas could not be converted; 2,811.21 hectares of swamp could be used for farming, fisheries, plantations, and housing without reclamation: and 917.85 hectares of swamp could only be converted with the approval of the mayor.

"However, almost all of the swamp areas can be converted through reclamation," South Sumatra Walhi education division head Hadi Jadmiko said. "People do not know about the zoning."
