PNG and Norway leaders see eye-to-eyen on climate change

Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare says his country and Norway see eye to eye in the fight against global warming.
Sir Michael has had talks with his Norwegian counterpart Jens Stoltenberg in Oslo where they discussed an ambitious, global climate regime to be established next year.
The two leaders say rich countries should shoulder the main burden under the regime, which is to include measures to reduce emissions from deforestation in developing countries.
They have agreed that it’s necessary to develop international standards for monitoring, assessing, measuring and verifying reductions of emissions from deforestation .
PNG has asked for support in this area from the UN Collaborative Program on Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries, or UN-REDD.
The initial phase of the UN REDD program is financed by Norway for 35 million US dollars.
Norway also says it’s willing to provide up to 550 million US dollars a year to reduce emissions from deforestation in the developing world.
