A CSIRO scientist has warned Australia's fight against climate change is being compromised by a lack of local research.

Hobart-based researcher Elvira Poloczanska is the co-author of an article in the latest edition of the journal Science that identifies a lack of research into the impact of climate change on marine eco-systems.

Dr Poloczanska says the impacts of marine climate change could include problems with fisheries and the spread of invasive species through shipping.

She says the lack of data in Australia is even more profound than elsewhere.

"We have very little knowledge about what's happening around Australia," Dr Poloczanska said.

"Most of our information's come from the Northern Hemisphere, and that goes for terrestrial as well as marine systems. And this is of considerable concern to us, so we really need to start thinking of innovative ways which we can start to measure our climate change impact," she said.
